Ka‘ānohiokalā Pe‘a
Experience transformative restoration at NIU Hawai‘i (Nurturing Is Universal), where the spirit of care is at the heart of everything we do. Our practice is led by Ka‘ānohiokalā Pe‘a, a Native Hawaiian and 3rd-generation licensed massage therapist (MAT-9551) based in Kurtistown (‘Ola‘a), Hawai‘i. Drawing upon the deep ancestral wisdom of his kupuna and two decades of clinical experience, Ka‘ānohiokalā is dedicated to resolving complex chronic and acute tissue issues. At NIU Hawai‘i, we bridge the gap between traditional Hawaiian healing values and modern therapeutic results to help you return to your optimal state of well-being.

George Leon ‘Iolani Pe‘a (“Keoki”)
2nd Generation
My father, Keoki, was raised by his maternal parents, Mary Kai‘awe Manuia Pe‘a and John Lonomakahainua Pe‘a Sr. He was a pioneer in the hospitality and healing industry, becoming the first licensed massage therapist hired at the Mauna Lani Hotel when it opened in 1983. Throughout his career, he was a tireless advocate for Lomi Lomi, ensuring traditional Hawaiian healing had a place in the modern resort setting. He was inspired and encouraged by his brother John, who shared the wisdom that would eventually shape my father’s professional path.

John Lonomakahainua Pe‘a Jr. (“Una”)
2nd Generation
My Uncle Una was raised by his maternal grandparents, Lily Kekino Kamauoha Manuia and John Kalei Manuia. He was a legendary figure in the field, serving as the first licensed massage therapist and owner of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel massage parlor starting in 1965. Beyond his professional practice, he was the Grand Master and founder of Pa‘ola Science, the specialized art of “Quick Healing.” His contributions laid the foundation for the standards of massage in Hawai‘i today.

William Kawahalama Manuia (“Willie”)
1st Generation
The legacy of protection and healing in my family reaches back to the Hawaiian Monarchy. My grand uncle Willie was the son of Lily Kekino Kamauoha and John Kalei Manuia. His father was a Master of Lua and a personal bodyguard for Queen Lili‘uokalani, a role requiring immense discipline and knowledge of the body. Uncle Willie carried that ancestral wisdom throughout his life, serving the community with humility and obtaining his license as a massage therapist in his later years to continue his mission of service.

Specialized Service Categories
Adult Care (Restoration & Therapy)
The "Structural High-Achiever"
- Age: 30 to 50 Years Old
- Profession: Business Owners, Remote Tech Workers, or Legal Professionals
-
- Pain Description:
-
- Chronic: Dull, aching tension in the upper trapezius and levator scapulae (the “weight of the world” feeling).
-
- Acute: Frequent tension headaches or “mouse shoulder” (numbness/tingling in the arm or wrist).
- Motivation: Cognitive clarity. They realize that physical pain is a “system error” that drains their mental focus and productivity.
- Why They Need a Partner: They are data-driven. They need someone who can explain why their posture is failing and provide a strategic plan to reverse the damage caused by their 10-hour workdays.
The "Legacy Athlete" (Active Agers)
- Age: 55 to 75+ Years Old
- Status: Retired or Semi-Retired Residents Who Value Independence
-
- Pain Description:
-
- Chronic: Joint stiffness (osteoarthritis) in the hips or knees; morning “creakiness” needing hours to work out.
-
- Acute: Sudden “stabs” of pain during simple movements like gardening or getting out of a car.
- Motivation: Autonomy. Their greatest fear is losing the ability to travel, play with grandkids, or enjoy the Hawai’i outdoors.
- Why They Need a Partner: They often feel dismissed by traditional medicine as “just getting old.” They need a partner who believes in their potential for movement and provides a safe, consistent environment to maintain their quality of life.
The "Repetitive Motion Specialist"
- Age: 25 to 50 Years Old
- Profession: Professional Paddlers, CrossFitters, or Manual Tradespeople (Carpenters/Landscapers)
-
- Pain Description:
-
- Chronic: Overused syndromes like “golfer’s elbow,” “jumper’s knee,” or rotator cuff impingement.
- Acute: Muscle tears or severe spasms from pushing through injuries.
- Motivation: Performance and identity preservation. Their hobby or job defines who they are. If they can’t paddle or build, they feel a loss of identity.
- Why They Need a Partner: They tend to ignore pain until it’s a crisis. They need a partner to act as a “pit crew”—someone to do the preventative maintenance they won’t do for themselves.
The "Post-Trauma Graduate"
- Age: Any Adult Age
- Condition: Recovering from Surgery (ACL, Rotator Cuff) or Major Accidents (Car Collision)
-
- Pain Description:
-
- Chronic: Tight, restrictive scar tissue and “guarding” (where the brain keeps muscles tight to protect a previous injury site).
-
- Acute: Nerve sensitivity or sudden inflammation in the area of the surgical hardware.
- Motivation: Closure. They want to stop being a “patient” and start being a “person” again. They want to move without thinking about their injury.
- Why They Need a Partner: Physical therapy often ends when “functional basics” are met. They need you to take them the rest of the way—re-integrating their body’s movement and calming the nervous system’s fear of pain.

Young Athletes (Ages 12 to 18)
The Elite Student-Athlete Restoration Program
We recognize that young athletes are in a critical stage of physiological development. Our pediatric sports restoration program combines the expertise of a third-generation licensed massage therapist with modern biomechanical assessments to help young competitors move faster, recover deeper, and stay injury-free.
The Initial Performance Assessment and Restoration (90 mins & 60 mins)
- What it is: A deep-dive clinical evaluation of your athlete’s movement patterns, flexibility limitations, and recurring strain.
- The Deliverable: Following the assessment, your athlete receives a Performance & Coach Report. This professional document outlines their current structural state and provides a “Performance Blueprint”to identify and fix imbalances before they lead to injury.
- The Goal: To move from “playing through pain” to “playing at peak performance” with a corrective plan you can share with their coach or trainer.
Ongoing Athletic Maintenance (45 mins - 60 mins)
- What it is: Routine, directive sessions scheduled strategically throughout the competitive season.
- The Result: Reduced post-game soreness, accelerated recovery between competitions, and sustained structural alignment.
- The Goal: To keep the body resilient, agile, and healthy from the first day of training to the final championship game.
